SEPTEMBER 28, 2009: POLITICAL CALAMITY IN INDIAN WELLS-CRP’S FALL CONVENTION
Posted by: | CommentsCalifornia’s 2010 gubernatorial candidates jockey for position, Fred Barnes relaxing poolside for breakfast, Andrew Breitbart at the bar, a chicken on the loose, This past weekend was a conservative utopia in Indian Wells for the California Republican Party Fall Convention.
One can learn a lot about the candidates running for our states highest office just by observing them when few are watching….not to mention their convention table set up. Tom Campbell spent a decent amount of time at his table with very little fan fare. His set up was crisp and looked like a candidate running for office. Meg Whitman was like a whirlwind with a thick entourage in dark business suits. When she walked in you knew someone important had arrived. She briefly stopped at her 2 tables to shake hands and pose for a photo op, then with a confident stride was off as quickly as she came. Whitman’s table set up was clearly the most interesting. Her 2 tables were loaded with vases and bowls filled to the brim with orange and green candies and a mega-store that only a former Ebay CEO could put out. Every Meg item imaginable was for sale. As for any indication on where she stands on issues, there was a really pretty glossy brochure. The set up was heavy on branding and light on substance. Steve Poizner in comparison looked relaxed and walked the floor with only a handful of handlers. His table was lackluster with literature in stacks. Quite indicative of an Insurance Commissioner running for Governor.
Ok…now on to the most exciting kibbles and bits, the dirty politics. A table set up across the room from the Mega-Meg tables showed a looped video clip of Whitman expressing what a “huge fan” she is of Van Jones, the Presidents former Green Jobs Czar and self avowed communist. The most entertaining was a person in a chicken suit running around with a sign proclaiming Whitman was to chicken to debate as it’s handler briskly handed out paper fans with Meg’s picture on it with the slogan “I’m a huge fan of Van Jones”. The strangest was a guy in a rubber president mask and a mock secret service agent. That had something to do with Steve Poizner and former Vice President Al Gore. Still trying to figure that one out.
If this early stage of the 2010 race is any indication, it will only get more interesting from here on out. The CRP Spring convention in Santa Clara will take place in March, only a few short months before the state primary in June. That one should prove to be worth the price of admission.
From talking to folks at the convention one thing is clear, very few have committed to a candidate yet. It’s any one’s race.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2009: Poizner Makes A Mess
Posted by: | CommentsWith 9 months to go before the June 8th California primary election, Insurance Commissioner and 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner isn’t wasting anytime getting messy with his primary opponent Meg Whitman.
The single-sided mud slinging started a few weeks ago when Poizner launched a new website www.PoiznerFacts.com to share facts about his opponent and refute “Meg’s smear campaign”. The site hits Whitman’s inconsistent voting and “ducking” of debate invitations:
“FACT: Meg Whitman and her campaign are willing to say and do anything to avoid open debate.”
Ouch. As for the “smear campaign”, Poizner has posted what appears to be an email from Whitman Press Secretary Sarah Pompei to Jarrod Agen with an attached MP4 file named “Steve Poizner on prisons” What that’s about, who knows? Poizner says the smear campaign is a diversion from Whitman’s imperfections:
“Clearly, Meg Whitman and her team will do and say anything to hide the fact that she doesn’t vote, won’t debate, and is not a conservative”
RINO (Republican in name only) name calling, double OUCH!
This past week, Poizner ramped up the rhetoric with an internet video parody titled the “Love Boat”. In this web gem (which is actually funny) Whitman is nailed for her praise of President Obama’s Green Job’s Czar Van Jones, who resigned this weekend under the cloak of darkness in controversial disgrace. In July 2008 Whitman went on a climate change cruise with Van Jones and Jimmy Carter and Jones made quite an impression. In the video Whitman claims to be a “huge fan” of Van Jones and gushes on how “bright” and “articulate” he is.
Whitman being linked to a self avowed communist and 9/11 truther gives more than enough ammunition to Poizner to use against her, and he was smart to make such clever use of it. As for the debate “ducking” someone should tell Poizner it’s September. It might be prudent to engage in a debate when California is actually paying attention to the Governor’s race. For example, ask anyone in California who is running for Governor and you’ll see a lot of head scratching. Whether or not Poizner’s politics as usual will have the desired effect remains to be seen next June. I suspect Whitman will continue to keep the focus on her strategic initiatives for California: economy, jobs and education.
Just in case your keeping score: 0 references to opponent’s on Meg Whitman’s website.
JULY 26, 2009: Welcome To California
Posted by: | CommentsFor a bit of levity on a Sunday, here is a video my brother (from another state) found from a Santa Cruz City Council meeting. He believes this is a perfect argument for why California should just fall off into the ocean. If she’s a registered voter, it’s no wonder we are in such a pickle.
In a time of great political calamity, we can all use a good laugh.
JULY 14, 2009: Governor Schwarzenegger To “Stand For California”
Posted by: | CommentsGovernor Schwarzenegger’s California Dream Team is at it again launching a new website StandForCA.com. The site boasts the Governor’s “firm” stance on a balanced budget, not increasing taxes, saving jobs and getting rid of government waste, fraud and abuse. Sounds good but where has he been for the last 6 years of his term? These are serious issues our state has been plagued with even before his recall election. This epiphany has suddenly graced his conscience?
Take the issue of not increasing taxes; remember just a few short months ago to the campaign leading up to the May 19th special election. The Governor personally employed political tactics of fear to scare voters into approving the largest tax increase in history. The Governor’s “Dream Team” funneled MILLIONS into support for the propositions, which would have cost Californians BILLIONS in new taxes. But Schwarzenegger has suddenly seen the light on the tax issue….OK…let’s hope he sticks to that.
As for saving jobs, California has seen a mass exodus of businesses leaving the state for years. This has cost countless jobs and skyrocketed unemployment to a current rate of 11.5% statewide. The Governor has sat by while the Legislature created an anti business climate and done little to stop it. But now something must be done to save the jobs….OK.
Is this an attempt by the Governor to rehabilitate is legacy in his remaining months of office? A true change of heart as he looks back at what might have been if only he weren’t afraid of getting his hands dirty and taking a hit in opinion polls? Only time and whatever budget gets passed will tell if it’s convection or self-preservation.
JULY 7, 2009: City Of LA Asking For Donations For Jackson Memorial
Posted by: | Comments
Do to public outrage I’m sure, the City of Los Angeles is soliciting donations to help defray the costs of Michael Jackson’s memorial service today at Staples Center. The City has established a PayPal account for tax-deductible donations.
Once all public services are figured in (police, fire, paramedics) the cities tab is expected to run about $4 MILLION dollars. Not surprising, between the ticket distribution at Dodger Stadium, the private service at Forest Lawn and the public memorial at Staples it’s a logistical nightmare for the City. Keep in mind Los Angeles in true California financial calamity fashion is in the red with a deficit of over $550 MILLION dollars.
City Councilwoman Jan Perry stated that the overtime for the LAPD would be paid out of a reserve fund in the City’s budget. The fund which is generally used for extraordinary events such as natural or major disasters, and special events like, marches and protests has plenty of cash as the new fiscal year started on July 1st. Perry is acting as Mayor while Antonio Villaraigosa vacations in Africa and Eric Garcetti, City Council President is in Japan.
If you remember a few short weeks ago, the city expenses for the Lakers Championship Parade was exclusively funded by private donations. The Lakers are a major source of revenue for the City of LA and yet the City was not burdened with the cost associated with their victory parade.
AEG, the company who owns Staples Center and the promoter of what was to be Jackson’s up coming tour, stands to make millions, maybe even billions off rehearsal footage of Michael in the weeks and days before his death. Can they not foot the bill for the city services? What about the revenue from concessions inside the event at Staples and the fees paid by media for spots outside the venue? AEG is flush with cash; the City of LA is not.
This is not about Michael; it’s about money and LA cities fiscal irresponsibility and failure to shield the taxpayers from an unnecessary burden.
Call AEG and ask them to do the right thing. It’s obvious the LA City Council isn’t going to. Contact AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke at the companies corporate headquarters (213) 763-7700 located in downtown Los Angeles.
MAY 16, 2009: Vakay Gets It Right
Posted by: | CommentsFor a change we’ve decided to give you someone else’s opinion on our blog. Here is an article from a Los Angeles area newspaper, The Signal. Columnist Lynn Vakay hits the nail on the head, this election is not about party politics, it’s about proposition’s that have dire financial consequences for California taxpayers that must be defeated. Vakay also stresses the need for voters to educate themselves; we believe this is critical if we are to take our state back from the brink of fiscal calamity. Enjoy….
Lynn Vakay: Coming together to stop the props
I was surprised when the Service Employees International Union voted to oppose 1A.
I was surprised when the California Nurses Association and the California Federation of Teachers voted to oppose 1A.
I was surprised when fellow Santa Clarita Democrat columnist Carole Lutness stated her opposition to the propositions, and particularly 1A.
And, I was really surprised when the California Democratic Party did not endorse half of the propositions on the May 19 ballot, particularly 1A.
I realize the reasons Democrats have for opposing the propositions are entirely different from my reasons.
However, this grassroots bi-partisanship should prove, finally, that these propositions have major flaws and should be voted down by every single voter regardless of party affiliation.
Interestingly, this Democratic opposition came right on the heels of the California Republican Party voting against our own Republican (in name only) governor by endorsing a “no” on all the propositions.
I can’t help but wistfully think maybe, just maybe, most Californians (including Democrats) are getting sick and tired of being taxed to death and deceived by tax-happy politicians — on the left and the right.
I also can’t help but hope that maybe these same Californians are waking up and realizing that we cannot tax and spend ourselves into prosperity.
I do know that everyone I talk with on a personal level (Democrat, Republican and Independent alike) recognizes this basic principle.
Most Americans realize that the government has no right to behave carelessly with money. When individuals have to work hard, budget, save, cut back on spending and live within their means, then government should also.
When most Americans are sacrificing in many areas of their lives due to cutbacks, layoffs, foreclosures and tax increases, government continues to demand more money and more “sacrifice.” This is unconscionable.
The next time I hear a politician say, “We all need to sacrifice,” I think I’m going to throw up.
When the state and federal budgets include spending increases, it’s not sacrifice. It’s insanity.
Whatever happened to good old-fashioned “living within our means?”
I’m quite sick and tired of hearing fat-cat politicians preaching to hard-working Americans about financial responsibility and the importance of saving and avoiding debt while at the same time bilking these same Americans out of billions — oh, excuse me, now it’s trillions of dollars — they can never pay back.
As I have continued to ponder the state of our economy, particularly here in California, I keep realizing that part of the problem is the fiscally responsible voter who is unwilling to go to the polls on special elections such as this one.
We somehow have come to believe that our vote doesn’t count or maybe we are just too busy and uninformed to cast the ballot.
First, every vote does count.
Second, we are all too busy and uninformed. However, we must vote, especially when both parties are opposing the same legislation.
It’s a no-brainer.
I must say, I have also revisited the question of who should be voting. The infamous Jefferson-Hamilton debate over voter qualifications has often run through my mind in recent years.
This is due to the realization that our electorate is undoubtedly uninformed. This is really by no fault of our own. It is simply because the system has become so complicated and detailed that no single voter can really know what is behind every piece of legislation on the ballot.
In the end, a typical voter will throw up his hands in frustration and avoid the hassle altogether. This is why our founders established a republic and not a direct democracy … but this is a subject for another column on another day.
For now, we cannot — we must not — miss this opportunity to vote down these irresponsible and deceptive measures. We must all vote on May 19 and we must all vote “no.”
Please join me and my fellow Republicans, Democrats, Independents and every other registered California voter in saying a big fat “no” to Sacramento and their deceptive tax increases.
Let’s prove to the politicians that we have figured them out this time and we will join together to stop their reckless behavior.
Oh, yes, and after you have voted on May 19 please join me and your fellow Santa Clarita Valley voters for a “We Stopped the Props” victory party at Route 66 restaurant in Canyon Country. The party will start around 7 p.m. and last ’til who knows when.
See you there.
